The legal environment for the grave stone masons and the cemetery bearer
We have about 28,000 cemetery bearers in Germany with over 42,000 cemeteries. These cemeteries, which were often overcrowded in the sixties and seventies of the last century, had to face the opposite problem: they are getting emptier and emptier. There are multiple reasons for that. It is certainly not the number of burials, which fluctuates around the 900,000 people a year. With increasing life expectancy, the date of death may be delayed, but ultimately it is unavoidable. In recent decades, the number of earth burials has fallen sharply and now affects about 46% of the buried people to be buried. Another 54% opt for a cremation and the rest share maritime burials or other anonymous burial forms. The causes of this development are manifold, but they ultimately lead to missed social and political decisions. For questions of funeral are no longer primarily personal or ethical decisions relevant, but are reduced to pure cost considerations. In his lecture the speaker will explain the connections and explain possible solutions for our society.
