Since its founding in 1919, Kunstgiesserei Strassacker has remained a family-owned business. The company is internationally active and employs more than 550 people in its headquarters and a subsidiary in France. The company´s history is an example of the progressive development of experience and competence in artistic craftsmanship.
Company founder Ernst Strassacker, born 1872, was trained as an engraver at WMF and later became an electrtype specialist. He gained experience in London and Birmingham in electrotype companies around the turn of the past century. In 1912, he and his family returned to Germany due to both homesickness and the difficulties that his wife Berta had with the English climate. Strassacker found employment as the managing director of the electrotype division of Kuntze, a company in Süssen.
He was drafted to service in World War I, as was his son Max, who was born in 1895. The desolate situation at the end of the war forced the elder Strassacker into the multitudes of the unemployed. It was during this difficult time that he decided to independently produce letter and grave decoration. He registered as "Handicraft workshops and bronzecasting foundry" in his hometown of Süssen in 1919.
The company grew despite initially adverse conditions. Besides grave decoration, which comprised the main business, increasingly larger fabrication jobs for sculptors grained importence. Several contracts for monumental sculpture were received in the second half of the 1930s - including works for the Paris World Exposition in 1937 and for such cities as Stuttgart, Pforzheim, Karlsruhe, Königsberg and Nuernberg.
World War II broke out in 1939, and Ernst wanted to close the company during wartime. Ill and burned out from the difficult work, he was no longer able to carry this decision through: He died in 1940.
Wolfgang Strassacker retired in 1992; his brother Ernst in 1994, at which time the entire executive direction lay in the hands of the youngest brother Werner. In 1992, a fourth generation entered the company with Werner´s daughter Edith Strassacker. She became a member of executive management and took responsibility for all marketing activities after having completed an apprenticeship in the retail industry, a university degree in management and economics and some time working in the profession. The generational shift was complete with the retirement of her father Werner in 2001. Since then Edith Strassacker, as the resonsible CEO, directs the firm´s destiny.
Continuing the philosophy of the third generation, the new leadership has placed emphasis on the symbiosis of technological advances, constant development of new product ideas and targeted marketing in existing and new markets. In the business area, the highest attention is paid to the maintenance and promotion of competence and exellence in artistry and craftmanship. Technological and economic processes are continually improved.
Sacred art, the firm´s central area of business, is supported through activities that go far beyond the daily orders of business. Here, Strassacker wants to fulfill a societal responsibility. With advertising series, exhibits and informational events on the topics of death, grieving, gravestone and funerary culture, Strassacker hopes to contribute to increased consciousness in dealing with this sensitive area of life.
In the area of artistic castings/contract work, we have established ourselves as leading artistic foundry and a competent partner for artists, sulptors, architects, communities and art collectors through our high-quality, developed experience and training of artistic craftmen. New product markets have been created in the area of achitectural hardware, a field that is continually expanding. Expansion of our global reach continues: An intensification of business relationships in Scandinavia, Italy and the Arab world is planned.
